CAPTCHA, WHAT?

What does it even mean? Once again I feel the need to address the issue of Spam control and Robot Proof Word Verification. With all the Blogfests and various blog celebrations, I would love to comment on as many blogs as possible. What is sure to stop me is Word Verification. There is nothing more frustrating then taking the time to read and think about a good comment, then having to decipher a lot of letters that do not make sense (that is if you can even make out what they are.)
Can you make out what this word is? If not, how many times are you willing to try? Please take off word verification! You want more traffic to your blog and I want to comment. Surely I am not alone. How many of you are robots?
Borrowed from a post on Facebook by Matthew MacNish
Blogger does catch most of the Spam! Do you even know if you have Word Verification on? I am sure that some of you are not aware and if you have been wondering why you do not have as much traffic as you should, maybe this is the reason. I tend to avoid blogs that I know are using this feature. Let's face it, most of us have a limited amount of time to spend. We don't want to spend it being accused of robot activity or inflicting pain on ourselves. (Such as hair pulling) Does any one else have an opinion on this? I would love to hear it!

Removing Word Verification
Note: The new Blogger interface does not have the option to turn off word verification. You have to click on the gear-looking thing in the upper right hand corner ("Blogger Options" if you mouse over it), and select "Old Blogger Interface." Then these instructions should work for you as well.

1- Go to your dashboard
2-Click on the SETTINGS in the blog you want to remove word verification from
3-Click on Comments
4-Scroll down just a little bit and you will see "Show word verification on comments" Click NO
*Right above this you can choose to moderate your comments.. if you want to read them before they go "live" to your blog click Yes

Thanks for this. We all need to spread the word. Take it off! Especially now that Blogger has made it unsufferable.

Yes! I posted a link to a step by step instruction on how to do this as well. People can always set it to blog owner approval or even approval on older posts, which is what I do.
Don't worry, this issue will be addressed many times before the Challenge begins.

It's hard to comment with this on, especially now that there are two letters all mushed up to try to read. I had to enter in four different attempts on a blog the other day to get my comment to go through.

I've written about this so many times....
I often see and close the site.

I hate word verification. Especially now that I can't see. It causes massive issues with me being able to comment. I'm going to repost these instructions tomorrow.

You know mine doesn't have that option under comments. I can choose to moderate posts but there is absolutely not a box to show word verification comments. I have no idea if I'm being annoying or not? Anybody want to report back on my blog? www.jayerobinbrown.blogspot.com I'd appreciate it.

Yep. I HATE captchas. I think most bloggers don't realize that they even have it on their blogs just because when they comment on their own posts, the captchas don't show up for them. Blogger does catch most of the spam. I've never used the word verification process and I've yet to encounter a spam comment in my blog. Plus, if there is one, it's so easy to go to comments and just delete. Easy as pie! Catchas, on the other hand, are far from easy.

Precy Larkins said...

I meant "captchas". Sheesh. Even the word itself is hard to spell correctly.

Thank you so much for posting this, Siv! Can't stand those things, and is it me or have they gotten almost impossible to read of late? I have to refresh the ones like in your photos 6 or 7 times before I actually get one I can decipher.

Anyway, you're right on about Blogger too. It does catch 99% of the spam.

Thank you! I have been trying to comment on blogs today and the verification is just so annoying! I removed mine and shall tell others to do the same. :)

Thank you for this post. Word verification drives me nuts. This two-step stuff is crazy. I can't make out some of the letters half of the time. I turned my verification off ages ago. Nothing bad happened when I did.

Well said! It is even more annoying to try three or four times to get the blurry word right. Too much time spent. Mine has been turned off for a long time - and then it was just one fairly clear word. This is nuts!

Sue said...

Absolutely! but there was a time there when I thought I'd taken it off, and had only done it for one blog for some reason. People must have thought I was loopy cos I insisted it was off

I used to like it because I like pretend words! :)

Can't agree more, Sis.

They drive us ALL crazy. Just check spam from time to time everyone. A few do show up there.

I'll be jumping on the band wain as well to shout at the top of my blog vice. Take it off, take it off, take it off......

Amber Clites said...

I wholeheartedly agree with this! It is super annoying, and a good majority of the time it won't accept my first try.

Lovely post!

I agree. Thankfully, I had a tech-savvy person help me set up my blog. She walked me through turning it off. Great post! ; )

Like another commenter mentioned - mine doesn't have the option. I can modify posts, but there is no option to turn on/off captcha.

Can anyone help? I'm using the new Blogger interface.

Thanks,
Michelle

Just FYI, the new Blogger interface does not have the option to turn off word verification.

You have to click on the gear-looking thinger in the upper righthand corner ("Blogger Options" if you mouseover it), and select "Old Blogger Interface." Then Siv Maria's instructions will work.

Just turned it off, after turning it on again...agreed it is getting more and more ridiculous.

I wrote a similar post the day after you wrote this! haha. Well maybe it was the same day, due to time zones. Not sure where you live? I agree that these captcha things need to go!

Southpaw said...

I really hope that this time people take it off!

Ashley Rachelle said...

I'd forgotten this was even on my blog! It is now off and I'm ready to rock. Thanks!

I found you through another blogger because of your captcha comments and instruction. Very well said and I have shared this on my page and every page where I publish my own blogs. Those captchas are keeping me from commenting on many blogs because they are just impossible and frustrating.

Spam has not been a problem for most people and they are completely unaware that they even have these evil comment killing things! :)

Thanks again. ♥

Oh, I forgot to add, when I added your link I had to solve a captcha to publish! How ironic is that?

Remember everyone, you have to switch back to the old version by hitting that gear thingy on the upper right side of your design page. The the option to turn off word verification will show up!

Paula Martin said...

I removed the captcha from mine ages ago, and Blogger has caught all the spam (which actually hasn't been a lot). It wasn't too bad when the letters were decipherable but the latest letters are impossible to read at times. I hate them!

Darlene ~Bloggity Blogger~ said...

Thank you!!! I posted a blog recently about the CAPTCHA's. I hate them! Also I posted instructions in our Facebook group about how to take them off their blogs. Several of my Blogger friends have now turned off the word verification feature, but there are many to go. So, I say, keep spreading the word as I will too!

Laura Rogers said...

Great job. I had Darlene tell me nicely and I soooo appreciated it because like many...... I had no idea.

Catch My Words said...

Amen! I used to have word verification on my blog. I was worried I'd get spam without it. I took it off and all I got was thank yous and more comments. So, pleeease! Also, feel free to visit my blog. I don't have letter verification mess, but I did just post something funny yet important for my daughter.

Thanks,
Joyce

I see so many posts from bloggers who hate captchas, I keep thinking, good, they'll go away... but then there still seems to be more and more people using this time-waster.
I don't have captcha and I get no spam. None.
Wish there was a little box to tick on these blogs that says, "came, saw captcha, left".

Since I removed captcha (which was previously word verification and not nearly so awful) I have more spam, so I've gone over to registered users only. Does that put people off? If it does I'll just have to start moderating all comments, because I don't want commenters who subscribe to comments to get a mailbox full of spam.
