The Seventh Father of the House

Once upon a time there was a man out traveling. Late in the evening he arrived at a large farm. He was both tired and hungry, so he asked a man who was outside sawing wood if he could put him up for the night.

The man said that if it was up to him he could stay the night, but he wasn't the father of the house, so the traveler should go into the smithy and talk to his father and see what could be done. So the man went into the smithy and asked the man working there for lodging for the night. But no, he wasn't the father of the house either, but his father was in the parlor, and the traveler should ask him.

The man went into the parlor and asked again, but got the same answer from the old creature sitting there. He was not the father of the house either, but his father was sitting in the chair, so it was best to ask him. And the traveler, now growing impatient, asked the aged creature in the chair for lodging, but as he wasn't the father of the house, he sent the traveler to the bedroom where his father was lying - perhaps he could help.

The man did just that, but the ancient fellow with the ear trumpet reckoned it was not up to him, and it were better he asked his father lying there in the cradle. Now quite alarmed, the man went over to the cradle and had to chalk his request on a board, so deaf was the shriveled up little man, who just shook his head and grunted that his father was hanging on the wall, and it was he that was father of the house.

Now quite out of his wits, the traveller caught sight of a tiny little creature inside a horn hanging on the wall. He gestured wildly to indicate his request and finally got a tiny squeak from the horn: "Why, yes, son". Then in came both food and drink and a good bed so the man finally got lodging for the night.

How old is the oldest member in your family? Mine is only 82.

LOL! I LOVE the magical way you weave stories. These pictures are GOLDEN too! :0)

The oldest family member on my side is my dad (62). And the oldest family member on Cade's side is his grandma (95).

I love this story! I can't remember my family ever being more than 4 generations alive at once. At present, the oldest is 86 and the great-grandchildren are in their 20's, so it's possible that we might make it to 5 generations.

My great grandfather died a couple of years ago and he was 103. Oldest living is my grandpa I think and he is 84. Cute story.
Thanks for being such a great friend. Your comment meant alot to me. I'm so glad I have gotten to know you.

My father in law is 88--I suppose at the moment, he is oldest, though one grandpa lived to 91 and his mother was older (possibly 100). (my other side is not nearly so long-living)

Very cute tale.

Great story! My aunt just passed away at age 90; my mother passed at 83. I'm just hoping to live long enough to get my WIP published. At the rate I am going...who knows.
Love your writing--I look forward to seeing your name pop up on the dashboard.

Now that's a lot of fathers. Very cute story.

No one is left in my family... parents, aunts, uncles all gone. It's just my two older brother's ( adopted older sister .. you!), and me.

I do have older first cousins, and I think the oldest is 68.
