The Art of Being Invisible

We all need a little break sometimes. So today I am being very lazy and invisible like these dogs:

Ever feel like you were invisible? I think the older you get the more invisible you become. I look in the mirror and see myself fading away. That is certainly not the person I know, not the girl I remember. So I figure that if I can’t see myself then no one else can either.

The real test though of becoming invisible is when you participate in a conversation and realize that no one is listening. The older you get, the less likely anyone is listening to you. I mean really, how many times do you have to say the same thing over and over again before someone starts to listen? Never mind, you are starting to become invisible.

There is a way to use this “curse” to your advantage. You can learn all sorts of secrets by being invisible. You listen; after all if no one sees you then they are more likely to say the most amazing things. It is like being sober at a party when everyone else is not. Being invisible you do not have to worry about what you are wearing or how your hair and make-up look. You don’t have to worry about what you say because no one is listening anyways.

When I first realized that I was becoming invisible it really frustrated me, but now I am experimenting on the art of being invisible. I can go where I want, do what I want, (as long as my body lets me) I can wear what I want, (I do not go around naked just yet) and I can say what I want. Who cares anyways? I might as well have some fun with my new found invisibility. I said fun, and although I have previously stated that I am somewhat of a criminal; I have no plans on going out and robbing a bank or any such thing.

So today I have decided to go into town and say “Hello” to as many people as I can and see how many reply. That way I can see just how invisible I am becoming. I will go to a cafĂ© and sit at a table all alone, and see how long it takes for a waiter to notice me. Then maybe I should go into a store and see if a sales clerk sees me and asks if I need any help. If that takes too long I can always try moving merchandise around; now that should get their attention, right? After this little adventure, I will go home, make dinner, and see if anyone pays attention to what I have to say at the dinner table. Even better yet, let’s see if anyone even noticed that I was gone during the day. My mother does not count, because let’s face it she is even more invisible then I am.

Getting attention is really over rated. Fighting for it is just too stressful, and is such hard work. So I think I will just take a little vacation from it and practice the art of being invisible. Who said getting older can’t be just a little fun?

So I posted this back when I first started blogging a whole three months ago. You can say this is my anniversary addition. Since I started blogging I have gotten 350 followers, over 21000 views, and my flags are from 110 countries, the newest one from Nepal( now that's cool). I want to thank each and every one of my friends for sticking around. I do my best to visit all of you. I don't always post but I am a very good stalker.

Back to fairy tales tomorrow and a story about a special bear.

Participating in a conversation where no one is listening? That's the way I feel with my blog sometimes. Oh, I know I have some readers, and I appreciate them, but deep down inside don't most of us feel that we should have a lot more people paying attention to us?

Happy anniversary :-) Sometimes it is nice to melt into the background...to be observant and selective in when you choose to be noticed. Sometimes being in the view of the spot lights let's someone else control your actions.

Man--In real life I have totally noticed this, but I think I've always experienced it a little bit. There is a Buffy the Vampire episode of a girl who ended up ACTUALLy invisible and at the end she ends up in Assassin school for the Secret Service--it's pretty poignant and fits your theme, only carried to the extreme. I think I will adopt your attitude on it... good way to learn secrets!

(love your experiment, too--it will be interesting to see how it goes)--I had one of those dogs from Disneyland when I was a kid--I loved it.

What a wonderfully witty & really rather perceptive post, Siv and I am certainly able to relate! I really think I prefer these more than the fairytales BTW ;)

And, WOW! Happy 3 month Anniversary...you've made HUGE strides into the blogging world in a very short time. Well done!!!

Look at you hot dog! lol I was worried at the beg of this thinking you were having a bad day. However I can sooo relate to what you are saying. It is amazing how invisible I feel sometimes. Know this though my new found friend, You are not invisible you are wonderful and I am blessed to have gotten to know you. My husband threatened to disown me if I ever play that video again. The music drives him bonkers. lol

Hi Sis,

Somehow I really do find it hard to believe that YOU are invisible. First of all, you are a striking woman. Still very beautiful from your pic. So I find in my travels beautiful woman are NOT invisible.

Perhaps it's a new power that you have and you can turn it on or off. LOL.

I most definitely have experienced this invisible thing and for me it is not age related but weight related. The heavier I am the more invisible I become. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

I am back in my visible mode dropping the writing weight I have gained over the past two years. I find if you make eye contact with someone you will never be invisible.

I am so proud of you that you have so many new friends from all over the world. It took me almost six months to get to 350 friends. I need five more for four hundred, but it's a slow go... Soon I hope so that I can celebrate with something fun for my blog friends.

Enjoy your invisibility... who knows what you'll find out.

This post caught my attention because I used to work for a wholesale company that distributed the "Invisible Dog". It was a perennially popular novelty items and we sold thousands of them over the years.

Invisibility has been one of the superpowers that I have cited as the most wanting. I have often found myself to be seemingly invisible in large groups, but often because this is what I have chosen. I like to lurk in the background just to see what is going on. When I make my appearance people will often ask "where'd he come from". I can definitely work to one's advantage.
