SECONDHAND SHOES

Secondhand Shoes Cover Reveal and Something Borrowed Giveaway

Today, Shelly Arkon is doing another cover reveal for her soon to be released novel Secondhand Shoes. She’s also giving away three books from the Twilight Series and eight books from the House of Night Series. In order for your name to be put in the drawing you must promise to Tweet, Facebook, and Google +1 this and leave a comment in the box that you did so along with your email, which series you would like, and what you borrowed on your wedding day to wear down the aisle. And I hope they weren’t secondhand bridal shoes that didn’t fit like her MC, Lila.

There will be no rafflecoptors or anything like that. She’s pretty much a self-admitted-techno-moron. Next Friday, October 19th, she will reveal two winners over at http://secondhandshoesnovel.blogspot.com/.

The Blurb

The shoes didn’t fit. It was an omen.
Eighteen year old psychic-medium-germ-a-phobe Lila should have listened to ghostly Gram’s advice the morning of her wedding, “Take off that dress and those shoes. And run.”
En route to the honeymoon, she decides to listen after too many disagreements with her groom. It doesn’t pay to go along to make everyone happy.
Still in her wedding dress and shoes, she escapes out a diner’s bathroom window into the Florida woods despite her fear of snakes and germs with her dead Gram’s direction.
So she begins a journey of finding her inner strength that puts her on a deadly run from her psychotic groom and his deranged friends.
Will she ever get past her fear of germs and snakes? Will she survive her honeymoon?

Excerpt
A screen stood between me and my freedom. I pushed it. Nothing. I pushed it again. It was one stubborn screen. I took off a shoe, scraping a blister. “Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow,” I muttered.
I held my spiked heel like an ice-pick and punched a hole in the screen, ripping the rest with my other hand.
I didn’t want to, but I had to put my shoe back on and get it over with. I jammed my foot into it and stepped. “Ouch, ooh, ooh, ouch.”
The ledge was tummy high. I slung one leg over it, held onto the bottom of the window, got my other leg up and over and shimmied my way out.
There were woods beyond the alley holding the diner’s dumpsters, trees all the way to the interstate’s on-ramp to my right and on down behind the gas station to my left and beyond.
A light wind blew my hair across my face. I looked at the sky. Dark clouds coming up I-75. I looked at the woods. Probably a million snakes in there, I thought.
“Don’t be afraid, Lila,” Gram said.
A half-dozen sparrows flew from around the front of the diner, low to the ground, and into the woods. I followed them in through the ferns bordering the pavement and into the trees. My lacey arm caught on a cypress branch ripping a portion of my sleeve from me.
I walked for at least a half hour. When Max and I left the wedding, it must’ve been mid-eighty degrees. It warmed up since then like twenty more. That was a Florida July for you. The humidity made it almost unbearable. I was sweating, my bodice soaked. The money inside my bra stuck to my skin. It itched. The lace on my one arm and back itched more. I smelled no better than Max did when he got home from work and every winged insect buzzed around me. I smacked at them. A big, black horsefly really liked me. It wouldn’t go away. I thought of Max.
My blisters and toes screamed pre-, mid-, and post-step. The balls of my feet, too. The three inchers got caught in vines, branches, and mole holes. It took a lot to stay upright in the deep leaves. I considered taking my shoes off, but there might be hook worms or some jungle ameoba waiting to feast on my leg muscles, and I needed my legs to get me out of this mess. Mom scared me out of going shoeless when I was little, and I’d never gone barefoot except on Mom’s clean carpets and disinfected floors. I wore shoes or slippers at Cynthia’s. Her mother didn’t vacuum every day. Nor did I taste Pine Sol in the back of my throat at her house.
A hawk flew down out of nowhere and landed on the ground in front of me, tilted its head, and blinked its eyes at me.
The hawk jumped up and down, flitting its wings. He turned and squawked.
“You want me to follow you?”
It hopped onward, looking back at me every third or fourth bounce.
From not too far behind me a male voice bellowed, “Lila!”
Max.

That's all I have for today. My time is spent finishing my book so if you don't see me around as much, you know why.

Have a great week-end!

Sharing Fairy Tales

Not long ago I wrote about Wayman Publishing which is releasing Open Doors Vol.2--an anthology where authors write their own hilarious, unique, or even tragic versions of fairy tales and nursery rhymes.  I submitted a short story based on the legendary tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, called Danny and his Magic Beans and it was accepted. Hopefully the book will be out in time for Christmas present! I am really looking forward to seeing what other kind of twisted fairy tales will be joining mine under the tree or in some ones stocking.

It is not too late to submit your work and submissions are FREE so what do you have to lose? This could be a great publication credit if your work is accepted. If you love fairy tales and want to put a spin on your favorite, send your 2,000 word or less story to Wayman Publishing  before October 31st, 2012 and you could be published too. I highly recommend working with this publishing group if you want to get your writing out there. They are a great group of people who are helping authors get started in the publishing world. Check out this site for more details: http://waymanpublishing.webs.com/

This is going to be an exciting week, more details on Wednesday. Tomorrow is my birthday and I am going to a concert. You asking who I get to see in concert? As it turns out my husband who sings in a choir is having a concert tomorrow night with a Norwegian Country/danceband vocalist. Here is a taste of some norwegain culture for you. I might add, it is NOT the kind of culture I enjoy, but if you love your spouse you support them even if it means suffering for a few hours on your birthday.

What are your plans this week?

What's For Dinner Dear?

Remember TV Dinners?
Let’s face it; grill season is over (on our side of the hemisphere). Women are reclaiming their kitchens and men are going back to what they do best, staying out of the kitchen until the magic words, “Dinner is ready!” If you love to cook and have the time and money to do it (let’s face it, good food costs-- which means better produce = more money) then you are in luck. On the other hand you are on a budget and your time is spent on a dozen other things. You know… things like a paying job, children, pets, errands, not to mention the book you are working on, or a project that is important to you. For some of you, “Take-out” is the answer. For some it would be frozen dinners or pizza, and for a lucky few it will be the words, “Let’s go out for dinner sweetheart.” Yeah right, here that only happens on special occasions and not always even then. A simple hamburger plate with fries in Norway costs the same as a gourmet meal in the states. I put away my restaurant clothes and shoes a long time ago.

So, you have stumbled onto my blog today and want to know what’s for dinner. Maybe you are like me, the dinner decision maker, the almighty coupon queen, (I really miss coupons) and the leftover expert. You found out the hard way that putting all leftovers in a pot and adding water does not make good soup. Despite my needs, not all leftovers go together. At a time of crises when both your credit card and bank card are as empty as the wallet in your pocket, and your cupboards are bare, your leftovers are not an option, what do you do? You still have options. Our mother had emergency supplies for such an occasion. We always had milk, butter, bread and flour in the house so toast with white sauce can do miracles with the right kind of what- ever else you have in the fridge .My favorite option  is to call up one of my children and ask them the question they have asked me so many times before…What’s for dinner? If you don’t have children there is always family or friends. If none of these options apply then you are out of luck. All other options I can think of are illegal. Tonight I am lucky, my left- overs go together.

What are you having for dinner tonight?
Have a great week-end and stay out of jail.

Octobers Panic Button:IWSG

The first Wednesday in October, and as I think about what to write for the Insecure Writers Support Group, the only thing that comes to mind is last October. Lately most of my thoughts are built upon reflections of last October. Maybe not so surprising since October is THE birthday month for me. Three birthdays in one month, mine and two of my children’s, but last October was special because I got to spend it with them for the first time in many years. So, now that you know my state of mind and extreme desire for a time machine, you should not be surprised that I traveled back to last year’s post for this group.

Panic: a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces hysterical or irrational behavior, and that often spreads quickly through a group of persons or animals.

Here is last year’s post. I find it fitting to re-post now, since I am once again under the panic of October and there are deadlines to meet.

As a writer we are forced to meet certain deadlines and make compromises that do not always leave us smiling. As these deadlines approach time has a funny way of moving faster, excuses turn into a work of art, and as you stare at words that make no sense panic takes over. Do you recognize that feeling? If you are anything like me you tend to wait until that last minute. In a confused state of denial you will look at the calendar and at the clock and say, “That can’t be right!”  So what do you do? How do you focus to get things done when that nasty panic takes control and you sit there like a zombie staring into space?

Overdrive is a natural built in human defense mechanism. For same strange reason panic is the trigger that puts me into overdrive. Once I accept it for what it is, I push it aside and move on with super speed to get things done. I work well under pressure, I do not waste time and I become more focused. So my word of advice here is to not fear panic, do not let it take control of you for too long. Panic came to visit for a reason, so once you have said hello, politely close the door as it leaves. Then you can find your super human “writing overdrive” and get things done.

What makes you panic and how do you deal with it?

Don't forget to visit other members of this group, maybe these writers are dealing with the same as you.

Spies and Gibberish

Little Lizzy found a rat pack in her neighbors closet, and was convinced they were spies from the governments underwear drawer. Stashing her 3 cent lucky charm up her nose she slithered around the corner and waited for the rest of the gang to get here.

In the meantime every little noise or bump caused Lizzy to cough and splutter so much she soon dislodged the 3 cent charm from her nostril causing it to  fly across her room through a window. When it finally landed, it did so in a horse’s trough where a pink little pig was feasting. And the coin ended heads up in the water of the trough, ever so slowly making its way to the bottom.

Lizzy scrambled from the closet on the trail of the coin. Climbing to the top of the trough Lizzy can see the shiny coin glittering from the rays of the sunshine, but how will she get the coin from the bottom?  This would require the help from her friends who worked in the lucky coin factory and had plenty of coins to spare on them at all times. When they finally arrived Lizzy had her pick of a new coin. But the rat pack still lurked in the background and they snuffled and snorted and gnawed on the door frame as they waited for the men in black and the strange little girl with a coin in her nose to make their move.

With their coins set on full blast they shot the rat spies out of the closet and straight back to the government where they belonged. “All in a day’s work.” Then they put on their sunglasses and walked away with Little Lizzy skipping behind.
