Treasures in a Box

The other day I went down in the basement with my daughter who was home from school for the week-end. The basement is a cold cement room with spider webs and copper pipes that fight for space on the ceiling. Unpacked damp boxes, junk and leftovers from my life are scattered and stacked there. Every once and awhile I end up having to go down there and search for something. This time it was an old book of fairytales that my mother had bought for my children when they were small. The particular fairytale I was looking for had the story about “Jack and the Beanstalk.”

You probably are asking yourself why I needed to find that story and I will tell you that in a minute. First I want to tell you about the treasure hunt. Oh yes, what started out as a quick trip to find a book, turned out to be an hour down memory lane with my daughter as we opened box after box containing her childhood treasures. Needless to say there were many boxes that escaped the basement that day. The Barbie dolls however, did not make it. I fear they will have to stay there until another little girl comes around to play. Do you have your children’s memories packed away in boxes somewhere because you lack space? I suggest you do as I did and introduce your children to them. It is a fun way to spend some time with these “grown-ups” of yours and to make more space for your own memories that need more storage as we get older.

Now back to the reason I needed to spend some time with “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Wayman Publishing is releasing Open Doors 2--an anthology where authors write their own hilarious, unique, or even tragic versions of fairy tales and nursery rhymes.  Submissions are FREE. This could be a great publication credit if your work is accepted.  If you want to find out more check out thislink!

If you do not see me around as much it is because I am trying to get my book finished and ready for self-publication. Yes, I have finally made the decision to get some help and publish it myself. Anyone have any comments or advice to give me on self-publication?  I would really appreciate it.

Minnie will be here on Friday with her monthly game of Gibberish so don’t forget to come back and play. Until then, have a great week!

Insecure Writers Support Group-Guest Post by Minnie

Another first Wednesday of the month, proving once again just how fast time flies. As usual my blog calendar is marked off for the Insecure Writers Support Group, and this month Minnie has some words of wisdom (Minnie-isms) to share with you. I do not always agree with Minnie but one thing is for sure, she is the least insecure “person” I know of.
If you don't like what you are doing than don't do it!

Rules of Being a Writer by Minnie:

1.       Be true to yourself. There is no point in trying to be a copycat.
2.       Dress yourself in the style you are comfortable in, not what others tell you. This is YOUR fashion statement!
3.       Go somewhere new and exciting every day, even if it is only in your mind.
4.       If you are going to write bullshit then you should be prepared to get bullshit back. In other words, be prepared. Know what you are writing about.
5.       Not everyone is going to like you. Who cares? You don’t like everyone either! There is always someone out there that will like what you write, so don’t give up looking.
6.       If the water is too deep then learn how to swim. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or learn a new skill.
7.       Practice makes perfect. Don’t expect a magic genie to appear and do all your work for you.
8.       Sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses. How you get to the finish line is more important than when you get there.
9.       Too many weeds strangle a garden. Get rid of weedy words and unnecessary flourish so the reader can better enjoy his journey through your story without getting Poison Ivy.
10.   Remember there is always a beginning, middle and an end. Stay on the path and don’t get distracted. Most of all….WRITE!

Want to see what others in this group have to say, check out the Insecure Writers Support Group.

Now that Minnie got all that off her chest, I have some news for you. The anthology Open Doors which features my short story, has last time I looked, made it to number 5 on the top 100 best sellers list for anthologies at amazon. YAY! The book fair was a huge success with over 40,000 entries! This means that there was a lot of awareness raised to help gain support for diabetes! This support will continue with a percentage of all profits from certain physical books until the end of October. If you want to help, than you can certainly click here and buy the paper book edition of Open Doors or any of the other books listed under my banner for Melynda’s Labor Day Blogfest and Book Fair.

The Nicotine Monster is far from dead, but the battle continues as he is being starved from my body. The physical act of him entering my body has however changed from cigarettes to patches. I consider that a large victory. Breaking "the habit" is more than getting rid of nicotine. The mental and oral addiction of 40 years is a big fight in itself! I know the dangers of replacing one addiction for another, but if lolly pops and carrot sticks will help me with this transition so be it! I know what you are going to say...STICK TO THE CARROT STICKS!! I hear you, but as you can see by the grin on my face, sometimes I just have to do something a little bad for me.

So how about a little encouragement from my cyber friends, and let me know what you tink of Minnie's rules!

When they tried closing my son's casket, I nearly fell on my face, not wanting them to shut the lid on my baby.
We lost it after that, totally cemented in our grief. Cade got into drugs, joined a rock and roll band, and even grew out his damn hair. At the time, I was sick of “the oatmeal option” (the only food we had), so I kicked Cade out of the house, and started modeling and working as a diesel mechanic. That was how I met Earl, an old man and unlikely best friend; the “big sag,” a middle aged woman who still flashed folks, and "The Cowboy" a man who fell in love with me.
It was slow at first, but Cade reverted to the man I’d busked with years before. It wasn’t until I killed a rogue skunk, and my daughter nearly choked on a fry, that I gave my husband another chance. But could our marriage recover from the death of our son?

Caught in a crosswind between the dimensions of life and death, a new thought distracts Blake when he can least afford it. Is what he works toward real or is he lost in a coma-induced dream? In an attempt to get back to those of his family who survived, Blake will be willing to risk it all, and the rest be damned.

It is not to late. There are still two days left to get your free copy of this book and many others in Melynda Fluery's Labor Day Blogfest and Book Fair. This is also your chance to read my short story Secrets of the Ash Tree which is based on the first chapter of the book I am working on. Here is a little spoiler:

"Some secrets are like dreams, just waiting in darkness hoping to get into the light."

When her father dies Liv finds out about a secret chest that is buried underneath an Ash tree in her garden. Once she discovers how to find and open this chest, her life is changed forever. Liv discovers her father’s secrets which eventually cast her into a world full of dangerous creatures, mighty Norse warriors and perils beyond her belief. Her father’s fairy tales were to become not only her legacy, but a guide line to survival and a map to the world she was about to enter.

I would like to wish all the students out there good luck with their studies. Some of you, like my son, may be going back to school as an adult. Whether it is to get that high school diploma, finish college or learn a new skill, it is never too late! If you dream of doing something, it is not too late too try and make that dream come true.
