Groom Lake

This month Minnie is exploring the alphabet by digging out the unusual, often unexplained and alternative way of thinking. Stories of creatures, places and mysteries that have been passed down to us through centuries tease our imagination, live in our dreams and dare us to explore the impossible. Join Minnie each day as she discovers something unusual in the alphabet.

"Hello...Is there anybody out there?"

Groom Lake is a salt flat in Nevada used for the Nellis Bombing Range Test Site airport, but it is better known as the name given to a famous “secret” military base also known as Area 51. Officially the existence of “Area 51” has been generally denied, in practice the area is part of an extensive training and testing range run by the United States Air Force.

Groom Lake, Nevada

It is believed that the base has been used as a facility for developing and testing new experimental aircraft and aviation technologies. It is also famously connected to the UFO phenomenon and conspiracy theories suggest that the United States is testing either captured alien spacecraft or new vehicles based on alien technology. The small town of Rachel is located near Groom Lake on the aptly named Extraterrestrial Highway and it is a popular tourist destination. Tours taking visitors to the famous “trespassers will be shot” signs at the very edge of the restricted area 51 are a popular attraction.

Area 51 has been featured in numerous films, books and television shows for many years including movies like Independence Day and shows such as the X-Files. It has become a symbol of government cover-ups and alien conspiracies in modern pop culture.

Have a wonderful Easter Week-end!

Area 51 - isn't it about time the paranoid Americans just said "Yes, it's there - so what?"
And how do I support your cpapcha free blogging thingy without copying your whole post to my facebook page?

Ah Area 51.
We don't have haunted houses in America in the 21st century anymore (well we do, but you never really hear about them) but we do have places like this instead.

I am trying to read all the A to Z blogs, but coming back to the ones I really like.
Looking forward to seeing what you do all month!

I went there, to Rachel and Area 51, for Spring Break when I was 16. I went to the signs, the black mail box, stayed at The Little Al'e Inn, and stayed out late at night looking for those UFOs. It was fun=)

Love your post. I've always wanted to visit Area 51. You would think after so many years the records would be opened by now. Happy Easter!

Oh yeah, it was a staple on the X-Files.
Have a great Easter, Siv!

Oh wow!!! I love the names! Groom Lake, a town called Rachel, a bombing test site called Nellis! And that's even before Area 51! My fave use of Area 51 is the ST Voyager episode "Little Green Men"!

Amazing!! Thanks for a fun G post!! Take care

Area 51, the worst kept secret in the Force! I think they keep the conspiracy theories going about area 51 to cover up where the aliens are really hidden :-)

I thought it was only the Greeks that were into Conspiracy Theories!
Ahhhh Area 51 - is that where they're supposed to have filmed the Moon Landing as well?

Good luck with the Challenge.
