OMENS AND SUPERSTITIONS

All through the month of April, Minnie will help me explore the people, places and things that WE call creepy, strange and downright weird. To be honest, Minnie finds almost everything creepy and strange so having the entire alphabet at our disposal is going to be a challenge. You might find what we discover delightful, or you may agree with us. Please share your opinions either way. Have fun road-tripping the Alphabet by visiting others doing the challenge as well. To find out more on the A-Z blogging challenge follow the link.

Have you seen the movie "Omen"? Damien is one creepy and scary kid, is he not? Here is a list of some Omens and Superstitions.

Death Omens

A picture that falls off the wall for no reason (especially if the glass cracks)
Clocks that stop
A mirror that breaks while still on the wall
A bird pecking at a window
Seeing the apparition of a living person (doppelganger)
Dogs howling at an open door
An owl seen during the daytime
A single crow or raven perched on the house
A healthy plant that withers and dies for no reason
Dreaming of falling (you will die in your sleep)

Death Superstitions

If a dog howls at an open door of a home, its owner will die soon
If you hang a person’s picture backwards, they will have misfortune for the rest of their lives
If thirteen people sit down at dinner, the first one to leave will die within a year
If a single match lights three cigarettes, the owner of one of the cigarettes will die
Turn around or cover all the mirrors in the house or the spirit cannot leave
If you do not turn over the tables or chairs a coffin rested on, the next person to use them will die
Carrying a corpse over a field will make the field barren

Bad Luck Superstitions

Black cats
The number 13
Killing a sparrow (they supposedly carry the souls of the dead)
Picking up a penny with the tails face up
Walking under ladders
Spilling salt
Opening an umbrella inside
Stepping on the sidewalk cracks
Refusing to kiss under the mistletoe
Giving or gifting someone an empty wallet
Friday the 13th
Changing the name of a ship or boat
Wearing an opal if you were not born in October
Breaking a mirror (7 years of bad luck)

Even though my rational mind tells me not to believe in this, I still find myself avoiding cracks in the pavement and walking on ladders. What about you?

I guess I'm not very superstitious then. Good, because we've killed our fair share of plants over the years.

I tend to not believe in this sort of stuff.

When I was a teenager, we also lifted our feet whenever we went over the railroad tracks. If you didn't... no date on Friday night. Well, for all of my lifting, I still mostly had no date on Friday night. So there you go...

Dogs may see in wavelengths that we cannot or their sense of smell detects what we cannot. Spooky!

Some of these are REALLY OVER THE TOP...

But I do remember avoiding cracks as a kid... an now I do walk around ladders only because I don't want anything falling on top of my head. LOL.
