Computer Separation-IWSG

It is hard to believe that another month has already gone by, and it is once again time for the Insecure Writers Support Group. For a couple of weeks now I have been adjusting to a new computer. I still find myself looking lovingly at my old Dell, and missing its familiar desktop. Do you get attached to your writing tools? I am in the process of developing a relationship with my new Asus, whose keyboard is different because he has come all the way from America with my son. You do notice that I call my computer as he, a habit that I have for all my appliances as well. So with this adjustment to my new writing tool I have found my temper rather short fused, and this has affected my writing. Transferring files, updating software and photos onto our new network is time consuming and confusing. My technical skills are not of a geeks nature so I stumble along and resort every now and then to asking for help from my husband or sons, who have a very geek side to their natures.

Oh faithful pen and paper, you are good to have in times of technical despair. I know that eventually I will learn to love my Asus and to appreciate all the fancy “Whatever’s” that my manly “geeks” insist are there. In the meantime, I find more comfort in the smell of fresh ink on paper. Poor Dell, don’t worry, I am not packing you away just yet. So tell me my writer friends, are any of you going through a computer separation, and how does it affect your writing?

For all of you out there that have been wondering about Minnie and her latest Gibberish, I am still waiting for her to come back from vacation. It is not to late if you still want to play just click HERE.

Oh, I HATE change. And computers become obsolete way too quickly. :D Just think, though. Soon, this new one will be the old one you can't imagine parting with. ;)

IWSG #179 (At least for today. LOL)

Change is difficult, but once you adjust to the new computer, creativity will soar. As for pen and paper, I've never tried to write my novel on it. Just use it for note taking and ideas. Good luck with your new Asus.

Change and I are not friends. Change could care less. She goes on her merry way. Yes, I call Change and computers "she." Actually, I am writing on Xena. I know. Roll those eyes. I have it coming! She is a Toshiba and proud of it! LOL. Great evocative post. Roland

I always keep the old computer just in case, and when I get a new new computer the old one goes to a niece or nephew who needs it for school. So nothing goes to waste.

Each time, though, I learn what I don't want in the next computer I get--like a tenkey on the side, with the mouse offcenter for the keyboard!

Sorry, I'm one of those geeky guys who gets excited with a new computer. Well, at least after I get all the software loaded, because something always goes wrong during that process.

I'm not good with change, but I make my husband manage all my files from one machine to the next . . he is the tech master extraordinaire and happily plays with my new stuff before I do . . .however it's been a while and we just made some repairs to my faithful current laptop. I'm not ready for another change yet, even if my hubs does all the painful work for me.

Yes. I get attached. I hate learning new computer programs. Its not my forte and it gives me a migraine.

Hugs and chocolate to you,
Shelly

As much as I love writing on paper, I need my spell and grammar checker!

I would FREAK without my computer. I was never the type to write on paper. I do ALL my writing on my laptop.

But drawing is another story ... The thought of creating art with a computer freaks me out.

I feel your pain. I am now used to my HP but it took me months after I had spent years with an Acer. It's not the keyboard - they're both UK - but the software. My HP wouldn't take Microsoft Word 2003 and I had to have 2007. What a nightmare that was.

Hey, Siv, I'm glad to say I'm now attached to my ASUS laptop and hate using the old computer in the office. But I had to make a wrist pad because the ASUS trackpad is so far to the left that I touch it by accident. You'll soon get to love the extra speed to get things done faster.

I know! You lose all your contacts and when you think you've transferred absolutely everything, there's always something you remember in the weeks to come. Actually - I hate the new Windows and I loved the old Windows XP. Can't think why they messed with it.

I'm back to tell you how to make the wristpad. Somehow I thought you had a desktop rather than a laptop or I'd have told you already. I found a placement made of the same material as a mousepad so the back side would stick to my laptop and the front fabric would let my wrist move easily. I cut a long strip to fit the entire section below the keyboard to the front edge, about 15 1/2" by 3 3/4" for my model. Then I cut out a rectangular hole for the trackpad. Mine is solid black and I use the right side as a mousepad when I'm in a car or plane. It made the difference from hating to write on my laptop to loving it. I hope it works for you.

I love My Asus but then I saved for it, hunted it down, compared specs, and lucked in to getting it on a two day sale for 1/2 price when was still top of the line. We've been happy together and when hubby mentioned upgrading I said "maybe in a year or two" because techno geek that I am I still am attached to my "baby"

Still the truth is when you want to write pen and paper will always be there ;)

I'm totally with you on writing with pen and paper...I tend to write first drafts longhand, set them aside for a while, then type them up and edit as I go. Not blogs, though - I tend to do those on my laptop from the very beginning.

I generally do not like change, but I have a bit of a geek nature, so I can adjust to computer changes pretty easily, especially if the computer is better than my previous one. I had to do this only about 7 months ago, but I adjusted quickly. Pen and paper don't even mix for me anymore, since my hand gets tired from writing with a pen.

But, I feel for ya! Hope you get used to your new computer soon.

Hey! I'm stopping by from the ISWG. My name is Talynn and I'm from Ink in the Book:)

I wanted to say I know it feels to get used to new computer. My Macbook and me departed on sad terms. Yes, I have a new one, but it's different. I told the guy at the insurance place (thank goodness I had an extended warranty!) that I felt like an old friend had dies. And she did:( I miss her, but I am slowly adjusted tot he new one.
Nice to meet you:)
